It is common to think that criminals should be punished, but what about those with mental health issues? How can we understand the relationship between mental illness and crime? This is a frequent topic of debate in the public sphere, challenging our perceptions of right and wrong.
In 2020, I started to practice dramatherapy in a forensic mental health service in the UK, working with individuals, most of whom were diagnosed with schizophrenia and/or personality disorders. Carrying a cluster of keys, alarms, and dramatherapy props as I moved through the male wards, I often found myself reflecting on my role and position.
Drawing on my experiences working and observing within the forensic mental health services, this talk invites you to explore the complex issues at the intersection of forensic and healthcare system, illness and psychotherapy, crime and punishment, and social welfare.
