Formosa Salon, in partnership with Space Cinema Club and the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute’s Taiwan Cinema Toolkit, is delighted to present four Taiwanese short films spanning nearly six decades.

1964: the streets of Taipei at daybreak.
1966: three young people climb a mountain and talk about art, war and the future.
Half a century later, an artist draws on Taiwan’s traditional paper-crafting and temple performance culture to retell a folk story that has travelled across Southeast Asia.
An elderly window-screen repairman moves through markets, streets and temples…

This event brings together four Taiwanese short films from across sixty years. After around 70 minutes of screenings, the host will lead an open conversation about the different ways we see and imagine Taiwan.

For those who grew up in Taiwan, which sounds, streets, people, ways of life and cultural details feel familiar? And through images from different eras and cultural contexts, might you also encounter a Taiwan that feels unexpectedly unfamiliar?

And for those who did not grow up in Taiwan, what did you know about Taiwan? What does Taiwan look like in your imagination? And after watching these four short films, what kind of place begins to emerge? We hope this screening can become a space for genuine cross-cultural encounter.

If you are from Taiwan, we warmly encourage you to bring along your international friends, family members or partners. If you are not Taiwanese, we would also love for you to come with friends from Taiwan or from anywhere else in the world.

We hope everyone can bring their own experiences into the room, watch films together, exchange perspectives, and perhaps experience a little gentle culture shock through our different cultural backgrounds and ways of growing up. We may not all understand Taiwan in the same way, and those differences are exactly what we most want to hear.

No previous knowledge of Taiwanese cinema or Taiwanese history is required. If you enjoy short films or are simply curious about Taiwanese culture, you are very welcome to join us! Whether Taiwan is home, somewhere you have visited, or an island you are only just beginning to discover, come watch the films and stay for the conversation!

倫敦講臺很高興能與「宇宙電影俱樂部」與「國家電影及視聽文化中心 — 臺灣電影工具箱」合作，邀請您一起來欣賞四部橫跨近六十年的臺灣短片。

半個世紀後，藝術家用臺灣傳統紙紮和藝陣，述說流傳於東南亞的民間故事
一位修紗窗的老人穿梭於市場、街道與廟宇之間⋯⋯

本次活動選映四部橫跨近六十年的臺灣短片。約 70 分鐘的放映結束後，會由主持人帶領大家，討論我們各自眼中的臺灣。

對在臺灣長大的人來說，哪些聲音、街道、人物、生活方式和文化讓你感到熟悉？還是你在不同年代與文化中，看見自己陌生的影像？對沒有在臺灣長大的人、或是對外國人而言，大家心目中的臺灣是什麼樣子？透過這四部電影短片，又看見了一個什麼樣的地方？

我們很期待這場放映成為一次跨文化的相遇⋯⋯

如果你來自臺灣，歡迎帶著你的外國朋友、家人或伴侶一起來；如果你不是臺灣人，也很歡迎邀請你身邊來自臺灣或其他地方的朋友同行。我們希望大家帶著各自不同的生活經驗，一起看電影、一起對話，並且在不同文化背景與成長經驗中，產生一點點溫柔的文化衝擊。

也許我們對臺灣的理解不同，但這些差異正是我們最想聽見的！

這場活動不需要任何臺灣電影或臺灣歷史的背景知識，只要你喜歡短片或是對臺灣文化有興趣，無論臺灣是你的家、你曾經造訪過的地方，或臺灣是一座你才剛開始認識的島嶼，都歡迎來看片！和我們聊聊～
